Consumers might buy high-cost, underperforming financial products simply because they are heavily advertised and thus more "recognizable" than superior, low-cost alternatives. This "cognitive miser" tendency, if unchecked, leads to significant personal financial losses.

Loss of autonomy. Over-reliance on Type 1 processing means we "literally do not have a mind of our own." Our responses become dictated by the most vivid stimulus, the most readily assimilated fact, or the most salient cue, making us vulnerable to those who control framing, labeling, and presentation. From choosing insurance policies to understanding health risks, modern life demands a capacity for decontextualized, abstract reasoning that often requires overriding our intuitive, Type 1 defaults.

Beyond thin rationality. While "thin theories" of rationality focus solely on efficiently achieving pre-existing desires, metarationality introduces a "broad theory" that critiques the desires and goals themselves. This uniquely human capacity allows us to evaluate our actions not just by their efficiency in fulfilling a desire, but by their consistency with our deeper values and self-concept. For example, voting might not offer direct utility but holds symbolic value, reinforcing the identity of a responsible citizen.

The problem of collective action. Metarationality is crucial in "collective action dilemmas" like the Prisoner's Dilemma or commons dilemmas. This capacity for higher-order desires allows for "rational integration," where an individual strives to align their first-order preferences with their second-order preferences and values. A mismatch, such as wanting to smoke (first-order) but wishing not to want to smoke (second-order), signals a lack of integration. This internal struggle, unique to humans, can destabilize first-order desires and make them more susceptible to change, driving personal growth and self-definition.

The Neurathian project. The process of self-definition through hierarchical values is a "Neurathian project," where no single level of desire is uniquely privileged as the "true self." Instead, we continuously critique and revise our desires by standing on some planks (values) while repairing others. This highlights the need for a broader, "metarational" perspective that recognizes the systemic consequences of individual choices.

Policing rationality. These dilemmas demonstrate that rationality itself must be "policed." We need to use rational judgment to examine the consequences of narrow rationality and, in certain situations, bind ourselves to agreements that prevent us from pursuing immediate self-interest for the sake of a better collective outcome. This involves recognizing when our market-driven institutions, often built on narrow rational models, might inadvertently threaten our broader well-being and require collective intervention or a re-evaluation of our decision-making strategies.
